Thalavan: A Mixed Bag of Investigative Thrills

Image
"Thalavan," directed by Jis Joy, is a recent Malayalam film that has garnered mixed reviews. Here's a breakdown of its strengths and weaknesses: Strong Points: Intriguing premise: The movie revolves around a retired police officer recounting a milestone case from his career. This narrative structure piques viewer interest from the outset. Solid performances: Biju Menon and Asif Ali deliver strong performances, particularly in their scenes together. Their on-screen chemistry adds an engaging dynamic to the investigation. Decent technical aspects: The visuals by cinematographer Sharan Velayudhan are commendable, creating a believable atmosphere for the story. Weak Points: Uneven script: While the initial set-up is promising, the script falters in the second half. Some viewers find the plot predictable and the dialogues occasionally bizarre. Celebrate Your Love for the Big Screen: All About Cinema Lovers Day in India

Image
India is known for its vibrant film industry, and Cinema Lovers Day is a special occasion that brings together movie enthusiasts across the country. This year, the event is scheduled for May 31, with various multiplexes and single-screen cinemas offering discounted tickets at ₹99 for a day. The initiative, launched by the Multiplex Association of India (MAI), aims to boost sales and attract a broader audience demographic, particularly families who may have found cinema outings financially prohibitive due to high ticket prices. Over 4,000 screens are participating in this event, including major chains like PVR Inox, Cinepolis India, and others. The discounted tickets will be available for mainstream seats, with premium formats like recliners excluded from the offer. Many single-screen theatres, particularly in southern regions, are also expected to participate, with some offering tickets at rates lower than ₹99, possibly as low as ₹70. The event is expected to attract a surg...

A Second Chance at Love: "Yesterday Once More"

Image
"Yesterday Once More," a 2023 Chinese romantic drama directed by Lin Xiaoqian, offers a charming take on the classic time loop trope. Starring Chen Feiyu and Zhou Ye, the film follows Yuxuan and Shuyan, childhood sweethearts reunited as adults. Their rekindled romance takes a fantastical turn when Yuxuan finds himself reliving the same fateful day, giving him the chance to rewrite their future. **A Familiar Premise with a Chinese Twist:** The film borrows from the well-trodden time loop territory, reminiscent of Hollywood hits like "Groundhog Day." However, "Yesterday Once More" injects a fresh perspective with its Chinese setting and cultural touches. The time loop becomes a playground for Yuxuan to right past mistakes and win Shuyan's heart over again.  **Chemistry Between the Leads Steals the Show:** Chen Feiyu and Zhou Ye deliver captivating performances. Their on-screen chemistry is undeniable, drawing viewers into the emotional rol...

A Glimpse into the Lost: Monihara (Teen Kanya)

Image
Satyajit Ray's "Monihara," the often-excluded middle chapter of his anthology film "Teen Kanya" (Three Daughters), is an enigmatic exploration of grief and obsession. Adapted from a Rabindranath Tagore story, the film, unfortunately, remains unseen by many audiences due to its omission in the international release. While details about the plot are scarce, what is known suggests a haunting atmosphere. The story centers on a man grieving the loss of his wife. Her spirit, fixated on a set of missing jewels, is said to linger in their house. Ray, known for his masterful use of light and shadow, likely crafted a visually striking portrayal of this haunting. Reviews of the film, though limited due to its restricted availability, highlight its focus on mood and atmosphere. Some suggest the character development might be less nuanced compared to the other stories in "Teen Kanya." However, Ray's signature visual storytelling and exploration of a...

wicked little letters(2023)- A seaside letter mistry

This adult comedy movie is strictly restricted to those over 18 years of age(contains foul language in dialogues) "Wicked Little Letters" is a breath of fresh air, a British comedy-mystery that's both hilarious and surprisingly poignant. Set in the 1920s, the film throws decorum out the window as a wave of anonymous letters, laced with profanity and social commentary, lands in the laps of the residents of Littlehampton.  The prime suspect? The fiery Irish newcomer, Rose (Jessie Buckley), whose outspoken nature clashes with the town's conservative sensibilities. But Edith (Olivia Colman), a seemingly uptight pillar of the community, starts to suspect there's more to the story.  The film shines thanks to its stellar cast. Colman is a master of deadpan humor, perfectly conveying Edith's simmering frustration beneath a mask of propriety. Buckley brings a delightful energy to Rose, making her a character you can't help but root for. The supporting cast, includi...
