A Monsoon Dream in the Forests of Kollengode

Kollengode(Palakkad), a quaint village nestled in the foothills of the Western Ghats, was the destination for my recent two-day getaway. The monsoon had set in, painting the landscape in vibrant hues of green and enveloping the air in a refreshing coolness.

A word about Kollengode

Kollengode, located in the foothills of the Palakkad Gap, is a significant agricultural region in Kerala. The area where I stayed is also situated within this historic pass. Nestled between the Malampuzha Hills to the north and the Nelliyampathi Hills (also known as Thenmala) to the south, the Palakkad Gap is a part of the Western Ghats. Other notable places in the region include Palakkad, Kollengode, Pallashana, Pallavur, and more. Kollengode is one of the primary areas in Kerala where rice cultivation is practiced right at the base of the Western Ghats. Renowned for its lush greenery and agricultural prosperity, Kollengode is often referred to as the "Granary of Kerala."

The journey to Kollangode was as enchanting as the destination itself. The winding roads, flanked by lush paddy fields and towering trees, offered glimpses of the majestic Western Ghats. The rhythmic pitter-patter of raindrops on the windshield added to the serene ambiance.

Upon reaching Kollangode, I was immediately captivated by the natural beauty of the place. The verdant paddy fields stretched as far as the eye could see, interspersed with quaint villages and ancient temples. The towering peaks of the Western Ghats formed a breathtaking backdrop to the serene landscape.

One of the highlights of my trip was exploring the nearby waterfalls. Unfortunately, due to the heavy rainfall, I was unable to venture into the popular Seetar Kund and Vellerimead waterfalls. However, the sight of these cascading waterfalls from a little distance was awe-inspiring.

My exploration of Kollangode also included a delightful motorcycle ride( thanks to Kishore for providing his motorcycle for me) through the nearby villages of Pallavur and Pallashenna. The ride was a perfect way to experience the local culture and soak in the beauty of the countryside.

A memorable experience was attending the Sopana Sangeetham concert at the Manvakkam Kalam Illam at Pallashana. The soulful melodies of the traditional Carnatic music transported me to another world. The serene atmosphere and the rich cultural heritage of the place left a lasting impression. Thanks to Vadavanur Vivek who performed Sopana Sangeetham and Thanks to Midhun( he was the camp coordinator) who arranged the event. Also got a chance to listen to Chenda Melam performed by few friends of Midhun. Midhun  was also part of the Melakkar(the melam performers) playing Elathalam

.                        ♥️Elsa♥️
During my idyllic visit to Kollengode, Midhun's adorable pet dog, Elsa, captured my heart. Her playful spirit and affectionate nature were simply enchanting. I was utterly charmed by her endearing presence.

Nestled six kilometers from the charming town of Kollengode, lies a picturesque temple of diminutive proportions. The centerpiece of this tranquil haven is a majestic banyan tree, its sprawling canopy casting a verdant shade over an area of two acres. The revered deity, known as Karuppuswamy, is invoked for blessings of good health for both humans and their cherished animals. Devotees from far and wide journey to this sacred site to offer sacrifices and pay homage to the divine. The breathtaking vistas of Seetharkundu and Palakappandy, as seen from this serene sanctuary, are truly awe-inspiring.

My stay in Kollangode was not only about exploring the natural beauty but also about immersing myself in the local culture. I visited several ancient temples, including:

1. Kachamkurissi Perumal Temple: This centuries old temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is known for its beautiful architecture. Here the diety is in sitting position under Adisesha- Perumal irunda kolam. The idols of Sridevi and Bhoodevi inside the sanctum can only be viewed as mirror images( this is  the unique speciality of the temple)

The warm hospitality of the people and the delicious local cuisine made my trip even more enjoyable.

As I bid farewell to Kollangode, I carried with me a treasure trove of memories. The lush greenery, the serene atmosphere, and the rich cultural heritage of the place made my trip a truly unforgettable experience. I can't wait to return to this enchanting destination next monsoon too.
